Frequently Asked Questions
Does Subbed connect to my bank or email to find subscriptions automatically?
No. Subbed is manual-entry by design — nothing reads your bank statements, email, or Apple ID purchase history. This keeps it simple and private, at the cost of having to add things yourself.
Does it work with subscriptions billed through the App Store, or only ones I pay for directly?
Both. Mark a subscription as “billed via intermediary” and name the intermediary (App Store, Google Play, PayPal, etc.). For App Store subscriptions specifically, the Detail screen gives you a direct link to Apple’s own subscription management page — apps aren’t allowed to cancel App Store subscriptions programmatically, so this takes you straight to where you can.
How does it sync across my devices?
Through your own iCloud account — the same way Notes or Reminders sync. Apple hosts the data, not us; there’s no separate account or server. If iCloud isn’t available (no signed-in account, or you’re offline), Subbed falls back to storing everything locally on that device so it still works, it just won’t sync until iCloud is reachable again.
Can I export my data?
Yes — Settings → Data → Export as CSV gives you every field for every subscription, shareable to Files, Mail, or anywhere else. It opens cleanly in Numbers or Excel.
Does Subbed handle multiple currencies?
Each subscription can be billed in its own currency, and you set a home currency for your totals in Settings. There’s no live exchange-rate conversion, though — if you mix currencies, the totals just sum face values rather than converting, since that would need a network call, and Subbed doesn’t make any.
Subbed – User Guide
Subbed tracks your subscriptions the way you actually think about them: each one is a circle. The size of the circle is its monthly cost, the ring around it shows how far through the billing cycle it is, and the colour shows its category.
The Dashboard is home. At the top:
1. Dashboard
Monthly total — what all your active subscriptions add up to per month, with a comparison to last month.
The circle cluster — every active subscription, sized by cost and coloured by category. A dashed ring means it’s on a trial or intro price rather than its ongoing rate. A red “!” badge marks a subscription you’ve flagged as **critical**.
Sort — tap the sort menu above the cluster to reorder the circles by renewal date, cost (either direction), or name.
Category legend — what each colour means.
Tag filter — if you use tags (e.g. `#essential`, `#work`), tap one to narrow the cluster and the renewals list below. The monthly total at the top stays unfiltered, so filtering never looks like it changed what you’re paying.
Upcoming renewals — your next five renewals in date order, with trial/intro pricing flagged.
Paused and Cancelled sections — subscriptions in either state get their own section with a one-tap Resume/Resubscribe button, so pausing or cancelling is never a dead end.
Tap the + button any time to add a new subscription; tap any circle or row to open its details.
2. Adding or editing a subscription
Title, website, subscribed-since date, critical toggle — mark something critical if the household depends on it; it’ll get a badge everywhere it appears.
Cost & billing period — weekly, monthly, yearly, or 2-year, in whichever currency it’s actually billed in.
Trial / intro pricing — toggle this on if it’s currently free or discounted, and set what it reverts to. Subbed automatically switches it over to the regular price once the trial/intro period ends.
Category — a fixed set (Streaming, Music, Productivity, Fitness, Cloud, Gaming, AI, Media, Other) used for the Reports breakdown.
Account — login URL, and whether it’s billed via an intermediary (App Store, Google Play, PayPal, etc.).
Household — assign it to a person or “Whole family.” Add new household members right from this screen.
Tags — free-form labels like `essential` or `reconsider`, used for filtering on Dashboard and Reports.
Value realised — how often you actually use it (Rarely/Sometimes/Often/Daily).
Renewal reminder — a local notification a set number of days before renewal.
What it’s for / why you need it — a notes field for your own reasoning, useful when you’re deciding later whether to keep something.
3. Subscription details
Tap any subscription to see its full picture:
– Cost, category, links, billing method, who it’s assigned to
Subscribed since and an estimated total spent to date.
Tags and a Value realised control — every change you make here is logged, so Value history shows how your usage of it has changed over time.
Pause or Cancel Subscription — both ask for an optional reason before applying, and every pause/cancel/resume is kept in a History list, so you have your own past reasoning in front of you next time you’re deciding whether to keep something.

4. Reports
Category and Tag filters narrow every number on the page — the total, the breakdowns, the suggestions.
Budget progress — set an overall monthly budget and/or a per-category budget in Settings, and see a colour-coded bar (green → amber → red) here.
Spend over time — your real month-over-month trend.
By category and by household member — where your money is actually going.
Upcoming conversions — anything about to roll off a trial/intro price, and the combined cost impact if you keep them all.
Suggestions — real, on-device flags: a price that went up, or something marked “Rarely” used that still costs a meaningful amount.
5. Settings
Budget — overall and per-category monthly limits.
Household — manage the people you assign subscriptions to.
Currency — your home currency for totals (each subscription can still be billed in its own).
iCloud sync status — whether your data is syncing, and to what device/time.
Renewal reminders — default notification lead time.
Data — export everything as a CSV (opens in Numbers, Excel, or anywhere else via the share sheet), or import from a CSV in the same format. Importing always adds new subscriptions rather than updating existing ones, so re-importing a file you’ve already imported will create duplicates.
